Story of Sangkuriang "Tangkuban Perahu"

Long time ago, in a kingdom there lived a family. They are Dayang Sumbi and his son namely Sangkuriang. They had a dog namely Tumang. The dog was actually Dayang Sumbi’s husband. He was cursed by a witch and turn into a dog.

One day, Dayang Sumbi asked his son to go hunting with his dog, Tumang. She wanted the heart of a deer. Sangkuriang and Tumang tried to catch any deer, but they failed. They got no deer and the day was getting dark. Suddenly, Sangkuriang saw a deer when he was going home. Then, he shot the deer and he hit it. Unluckily, it was not a deer. It was his dog, Tumang. He was sad, but Tumang was death. Tumang said “please take my liver, and give it to you mother”. Sangkuriang took it and went home.

Dayang Sumbi was happy because Sangkuriang gave what she wanted. She cooked the liver and ate it together. Knowing that Tumang was not there, Dayang Sumbi asked “Sangkuriang, where is Tumang?” Sangkuriang kept silent. After a moment, he said “Sangkuriang is death. I killed him. The liver we ate together was Tumang’s”. Dayang Sumbi was very mad. She hit Sangkuriang’s head with a wooden spatula. His head was wounded seriously. Finally, Sangkuriang left his home with a scar on his head.

Many years passed and Sangkuriang became a strong young man. He travelled everywhere. Until one day, he arrived at a village where he grew up. There he met Dayang Sumbi. But, they didn’t recognize to each other. Dayang Sumbi was given eternal beauty by God, so she still looked young and beauty. They fell in love to each other and decided to marry.

In one moment, Dayang Sumbi saw a scar on his head and she still recognize it. Then, Dayang Sumbi said “Sangkuriang, if you want to marry me, you should make me a lake a big boat just in one night”. “What? That it impossible, but it’s okay. For you I will do that, I can do that” Sangkuriang replied.

With the help of genies and spirits, Sangkuriang tried to build them.  By midnight he had finished the lake by building a dam in Citarum river.  Then he started building the boat.  It was almost dawn when he nearly finished it.  Meanwhile Dayang Sumbi kept watching on them.  She was very worried when she knew this.  So she made lights in the east.

“Huh? Troops, stop your work! It’s already dawn. The sun will start to rise. Quickly, go home, go home!” said the chair of the genies. They left Sangkuriang alone.
“Sangkuriang, you can’t finish my condition. It’s mean that you can’t marry me. You know?” said Dayang Sumbi.
“You cheated! You maked the light, so that my troops go. Because of that, I could not fulfill your condition.” Shouted Sangkuriang.
Sangkuriang was very angry. So he kicked the boat.  Then the boat turned out to be Mount Tangkuban Perahu.  It means boat upside down.  From a distant it looks like a boat upside down.

One day there was a monkey. He wanted to cross a river. There he saw a crocodile so he asked the crocodile to take him across the other side of the river. The crocodile agree and told the monkey to jump on its back. Then the crocodile swam down the river with the monkey on his top.
Unluckily, the crocodile was very hungry, he stopped in the middle of the river and said to the monkey, “My father is very sick. He has to eat the heart of the monkey. So he will be healthy again.”
At the time, the monkey was in dangerous situation and he had to think hard. Then he had a good idea. He told the crocodile to swim back to the river bank. “What’s for?” asked the crocodile. “Because I don’t bring my heart,” said the monkey. “I left it under a tree, near some coconuts in the river bank.”
The crocodile agreed and turned around. He swam back to the bank of the river. As soon as they reached the river bank, the monkey jumped off the crocodile’s back. Then he climbed up to the top of a tree.
“Where is your heart?” asked the crocodile. “You are foolish,” said the monkey to the crocodile. “Now I am free and I have my heart.”
